Project Overview

We were hired to tear out and replace an existing sidewalk for a homeowner in East Denver (Colfax and Syracuse Rough Area). This sidewalk replacement project included the front stoop leading to the home, totaling 202 square feet. The sidewalk itself accounted for approximately 170 square feet, with the front stoop making up the remaining 30 square feet.

The previous sidewalk had major deterioration and was unsafe.

The client had been waiting 15 years to complete this project, so they were excited to replace the previous sidewalk. Years of shoveling the previous cracked and deteriorating sidewalk was much more a job than a chore. The previous sidewalk was a nightmare of cracks and uneven surfaces. Our mission was to transform this old, problematic walkway into a smooth, durable path for the homeowner and guests.

Day 1: Precision and Preparation

Our team began work bright and early at 7 AM on November 12th. The existing sidewalk was 8 inches thick, so demolition was a bit more time-consuming than anticipated. Nonetheless, by noon, we had cleared the old concrete. The rest of the day was spent preparing the new base and forming the layout for the new 4-inch thick sidewalk and stoop.

To ensure longevity and durability, we installed #3 rebar every 2 feet on center, positioned 2 inches above the base. This careful planning ensures that the rebar grid is placed in the middle of the new concrete sidewalk, allowing for maximum strength and support.

Installing rebar reinforcement for a sidewalk is definitely overkill for most standards, however, in our experience rebar has proven to be the best reinforcement. Denver Concrete Inc uses #3 rebar standard for every project as a minimum.

Day 2: Pouring and Finishing

On November 13th, we poured the new sidewalk using a 4500 PSI air-entrained concrete mix. By 11 AM, the pour was complete, and the team finished with a broom finish, adding controlled joints cut every three feet on center to allow for expansion and contraction without cracking.

Final Touches and Aftercare

Given the sidewalk's proximity to the city street, sealing was essential. We scheduled the sealing for the following day, ensuring that this Denver sidewalk replacement would withstand the elements and heavy foot traffic. In total, the entire project, including site clean-up and sealing, concluded over four days, with the final cost totaling $4,500.
